Hodges Eye Care & Surgery Center in Tucson, Arizona

At Hodges Eye Care & Surgery Center, we deliver quality care and optimal ophthalmology services. We specialize in laser and laser assisted surgeries to correct refractive errors or address cataracts, as well as other surgical procedures to improve vision in individuals living with chronic eye diseases or conditions.

From your initial contact to post-operative care, our team ensures you receive the highest level of guidance and support throughout your eye care journey.

Cataract Surgery and Lifestyle Lenses

Over 20.5 million Americans aged 40 and above are affected by cataracts. When the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, surgical intervention is required to restore vision and improve your quality of life.

With laser-assisted cataract surgery, you can recover your vision faster and with enhanced results. As the top choice for cataract surgery in the Tucson area, we are prepared to guide you through the entire process and answer any questions or concerns.

During the procedure, we replace the affected natural lens with the lifestyle lens that best suits your needs and requirements.

LASIK surgery, Custom LASIK and PRK eye surgery

LASIK eye surgery is a safe and very effective procedure that corrects refractive errors in the eye, significantly improving vision. You will be able to see clearly without using glasses or contact lenses. LASIK has a quick recovery time and the surgery itself takes no longer than 15 to 20 minutes per eye.

We perform LASIK surgery in our Tucson clinic, with an expert team of eye surgeons with years worth of experience with LASIK and laser-assisted surgeries. We also offer custom LASIK (LASIK Contoura), which uses advanced technology to create a detailed map of the cornea, allowing for tailored laser treatment.

Schedule and initial consultation to speak with an eye doctor about your case, and we can determine the best procedure for you based on your lifestyle needs and eye health.

Individuals with thin corneas or corneal irregularities who want to benefit from corrective surgery can opt for PRK instead of LASIK, as this procedure does not require creating a corneal flap. You will get similar results to LASIK while preserving the integrity of your cornea.

Comprehensive Ophthalmology Services in Tucson

We provide a wide range of ophthalmology services besides surgical intervention. We offer essential services such as regular eye exams, refractions and prescription glasses and contact lenses.

We also offer ongoing care for chronic eye conditions and diseases, including diagnosis, regular check-ups and personalized treatment plants for keratoconus, pterygium, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.

Schedule an appointment at our Tucson clinic to receive the eye care you need. Feel free to contact our support center for inquiries about our procedures and services.

PRK Surgery (Photorefractive Keratectomy)

What is PRK Surgery?

PRK Surgery (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a type of laser eye surgery that is used to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. PRK is an alternative to LASIK eye surgery and is particularly suitable for individuals who may not be candidates for LASIK due to certain corneal characteristics.

Overview of the PRK surgery process:

  1. Corneal Epithelium Removal:
    • In PRK, the surgeon begins by removing the thin outer layer of the cornea called the epithelium. This can be done using an alcohol solution, a special brush, or a laser.
  2. Laser Reshaping of the Cornea:
    • Once the epithelium is removed, a laser is used to precisely reshape the cornea. The laser ablates or removes microscopic amounts of corneal tissue based on the patient’s refractive error. The goal is to correct the curvature of the cornea and improve the focus of light on the retina.
  3. Healing Process:
    • Unlike LASIK, where a corneal flap is created, PRK does not involve creating a flap. Instead, the corneal surface is allowed to regenerate naturally. The healing process involves the growth of new epithelial cells over the treated area.
  4. Post-operative Care:
    • Following PRK surgery, patients are given medicated eye drops to aid in the healing process and prevent infection. Recovery may take a bit longer compared to LASIK, and patients may experience temporary discomfort during the initial days.

Key considerations for PRK surgery include:

  • Corneal Thickness: PRK may be a suitable option for individuals with thinner corneas who may not be ideal candidates for LASIK.
  • Occupational Considerations: PRK may be recommended for individuals with occupations or lifestyles that carry a risk of corneal injury, as it eliminates the creation of a corneal flap.
  • Healing Time: The initial visual recovery may take longer with PRK compared to LASIK. Patients typically experience optimal vision several weeks after the procedure.

PRK is a well-established and effective procedure for vision correction, and its suitability depends on individual factors. It’s important to consult with an experienced refractive surgeon or eye care professional to determine the most appropriate laser eye surgery option based on your eye health and lifestyle.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Refractive lens exchange (RLE), is when a clear lens is implanted to replace your eye’s natural lens to correct your vision.

This procedure is often used for pre-cataract patients, as a preventative vision correction solution. Refractive lens exchange (RLE) can also correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
