Sacramento, California, is the capitol of this large state. Home to nearly 2.5 million individuals, the city has managed to remain more affordable than other metropolitan areas like Los Angeles or San Francisco. Sacramento hosts many great restaurants, art events, and businesses, but it is desirable for many people because it is close to other major cities, so residents get the best of all worlds.

The median age of Sacramento residents is 37 years old, so most people who live and work there are approaching middle age. Many vision problems begin or become more pronounced around 40 years old.

Most adults are used to getting regular eye exams to keep track of prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses because refractive errors like nearsightedness or astigmatism begin in childhood or young adulthood. Problems like cataracts begin in middle age, and they require regular eye exams to keep track of the disease’s progress.

People who are in their 20s and 30s may have struggled with these common refractive errors:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)
  • Astigmatism

These conditions are caused by a cornea that is shaped so light does not refract clearly to the retina. Instead, the image processed by the brain is fuzzy in some way.

Glasses and contact lenses are the traditional methods for correcting refractive errors, as these devices act like an additional layer for the cornea to correctly refract light to the back of the eye. However, many young and middle-aged adults may have worn glasses for so many years that they are tired of dealing with them and want a solution.

LASIK Surgery

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 8 million people in the U.S. have an uncorrected refractive error, so they benefit from access to laser surgery like LASIK. This surgery can do a lot to make vision clearer.

It is possible to have side effects from LASIK surgery. According to a new report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the complication rate associated with LASIK is about 45 percent. This means symptoms like dry eyes, glares or halos around lights, and trouble seeing at night can occur. These are most likely to clear up in six months or less after the procedure.

Around 42 percent of California residents get regular eye exams, according to new Medicare statistics. It is important for adults of all ages to have regular eye exams, at least every two to three years until middle age. Older adults, who are more at risk of developing cataracts that require surgery, should get eye exams every year. If you have a refractive error or are at risk of an eye disease like cataracts or glaucoma, consult with your optometrist and consider getting eye exams annually.

Since many Sacramento residents are approaching middle age, regular eye exams are crucial to determine if cataracts have developed and if surgery becomes necessary.
