I’m an avid outdoor person and, as an optometrist, I’ve always fit myself with great contact lenses or glasses.
I like getting out in the backcountry; getting away from society. What I really like to do in the backcountry is photography, especially astro-photography at nighttime.
One time I was stuck in a windstorm backpacking and my eyes started getting drier and drier. Since my contacts were so dried out from the wind, I was stuck living with blurred vision for days. I realized that I needed to do something as an alternative.
Back at my practice in Del Mar, California, I was recommending cataract and refractive surgeries to my patients, and I noticed that they were actually seeing better than I was with my contact lenses. That was when I decided to take the plunge.
I had the Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) procedure done by NVISION surgeon Dr. Mihir Parikh in La Jolla, California. I have the Symfony lens where I can see both far and up-close without having the need to depend on my glasses and it fits my active lifestyle very well. I’m seeing blues so much better, purples are so much more vivid, and I’ve seen sunsets better than ever before.
The surgery for me has been great because it’s just one less worry for me to have to plan for when I’m backpacking or surfing. I don’t have to worry about the inconvenience of contacts or glasses (like losing contact lenses or having them dry up!)
I am so happy with my vision after my refractive lens exchange. Now I can open my eyes under water, it’s been really great!
